What is Fascia?

What is Fascia
Think of Fascia, as a three-dimensional web that wraps around every muscle, bone, and organ in your body. It consists of specialised cells swimming in a fluid called the "Extracellular Matrix"—mostly collagen and water. This system is so vital that without it, we would literally be a blob on the floor!
In a healthy body, this web is hydrated and slippery, allowing your muscles and organs to glide smoothly and friction-free. But when life happens, that "glide" can turn into "stick."

What makes Fascia go sticky?
Fascia is an amazing, living entity. It can actually reform itself to any posture you regularly hold (think about all the sitting we do in a day!). It becomes "sticky" or restricted due to:
- Prolonged Sitting: Slowly stiffens your joints and locks tension deep into the web.
- Dehydration: Fascia needs water to stay pliable; without it, the layers become dry and "glued" together.
- Repetitive Strain & Trauma: Past surgeries, injuries, or repetitive movements create inflammation and "scarring" in the fascia.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: Inactivity causes the tissue to harden and shorten, weakening your muscles over time.
How do I know if mine is restricted?
You don't need a medical degree to spot sticky fascia. Look for these three signs:
- The Skin Drag: When you move, your skin feels "tethered" to the tissue underneath.
- Rough Transitions: Your movements feel "clunky" or jumpy rather than smooth.
- Surprising Intensity: Even a gentle touch can feel intense because the layers aren't sliding properly.
How Massage & Gua Sha Help
As a Massage Therapist, my goal is to find where these fascial restrictions are hiding and help release them. One of the most effective tools I use is Gua Sha.
Gua Sha works beautifully on a superficial level to "comb" through the connective tissue. It helps to break up adhesions, move stagnant fluid, and encourage the fascia to glide freely once again. Sometimes a release doesn’t "hold" because the primary restriction is actually somewhere else—for example, knee pain might be caused by a misaligned pelvis. I look for the "primary dysfunction" rather than just treating the symptom.
The Domino Effect
The most fascinating thing about Fascia is that it’s all connected. An ankle restriction can actually be the hidden cause of your neck pain. Your body will do anything to keep your eyes level with the horizon, so it will "kink" the rest of the web to make that happen.
I hope you find this as interesting as I do—the human body is truly an amazing piece of organic engineering!
